Lazy keto simply counts your carbohydrate intake. No need to track macro grams or percentages.

You will need to keep your carbs below 50 grams per week (source). Some people need less than 50 grams per day. Everybody is different.

Classic Keto vs Lazy Keto

The classic keto diet is when a person consumes only 4% carbohydrates, 6% proteins, and 90% of their total calories as fats (source).

The difference between classic and lazy keto comes down to whether you track all macronutrients, or only the carb grams.

The classic keto diet requires that the person weighs the food they consume and keeps track of the protein, fat, and carbohydrate calories for the day.

Dirty Keto vs Lazy Keto

Dirty Keto is when you eat anything that fits within your macros. You don't need to worry about what you eat.

The main difference between dirty keto and lazy keto is that on dirty keto you track all your macros, while on lazy keto you only track carbs.

Losing Weight

You can lose weight on lazy keto. It may be said that counting carbs is not enough to lose weight, but it's not true. Women's Health has a story about a person who lost 150 pounds by following this keto diet.

You could be consuming too much protein. Then, gluconeogenesis occurs. This is a pathway that your body uses to create glucose from protein.

Everyone is different. Ketogenic.com describes in their blog how different people are on the topic of protein. They explain that, if your body is more sensitive to insulin than others (which is a good thing), it will not easily kick you out due to high protein levels.

Test your ketones and track your protein intake. Ketogenic.com provides more information on how to do this. It's not easy to track carbs alone.

You can still calculate your protein allowance to get an idea about what you could eat each day. You can then estimate your protein allowance when you want to only count carbs.

Test your blood ketone level to determine if you're not losing weight when eating this way. It is more accurate to test ketone levels in blood than urine or breath (source).

If your ketosis is still intact then protein is not the issue. It could be that you are eating too many calories, or there is something else preventing weight loss.

Lazy Keto Foods

1.5 Total Carbs

All of the foods that you eat would be keto foods. Enjoy these foods if the carbs count is low enough.

Here is a list with common foods that you can eat.

  • Meatsuch a as beef, poultry, pork, deer, and turkey.
  • Seafoodsuch a haddock salmon, anchovies shrimp and tuna.
  • Berriessuch a blueberries, strawberries and raspberries
  • Low-carb vegetables such as lettuces, broccoli, cauliflowers, mushrooms, zucchinis, and asparagus.
  • Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and brazil nuts.

You can also enjoy keto packaged foods. Check the carbs per serving of these products and eat according to that.

Starbucks, for example, offers coffee. You can use almond milk or heavy cream instead of cow's dairy milk and sugar-free syrups.

Example of a Lazy Keto Meal Plan

This is a list of foods you can have for one day.

Breakfast: fatty coffee (add 2 tablespoons butter to your coffee), 2 eggs and 2 bacon pieces.

Lunch: Cobb salad with avocado drizzled with Avocado Oil

Dinner - Ribeye steak, mushrooms and butter.

You only have to track one macronutrient - carbs.

It's difficult to go overboard on protein and get out of ketosis. This takes away the worry of how much to eat.

is not always getting the right nutrition. It doesn't matter what you eat or don't eat, only how many carbs.
